At Beatrice Community Hospital, we believe caring for our neighbors means more than treating illness, it means caring for the whole person. For years, our Food Insecurity Program has quietly supported patients who are facing one of life’s most basic struggles: putting food on the table.
When a patient visits the hospital, they are screened for a variety of things, including food insecurity. Our case managers connect them with BCH Nutritional Services, where pre-made pantry bags are ready to go. Each bag contains enough shelf-stable, nutritious food to feed a single person for four days. The bag also contains recipes, local resources, and even a can opener to ensure nothing goes to waste.
These bags do more than fill empty stomachs. They provide relief, dignity, and hope, especially for families who never expected to need help. Last year alone, countless patients left the hospital with one less worry because of this program.
But today, the funds that make these pantry bags possible have been fully depleted. With the holiday season approaching, we anticipate a significant increase in the number of patients needing food assistance.
