When a patient screens positive for food insecurity, our case managers connect them with Nutritional Services, where pre-made pantry bags are ready to go. Each bag contains enough shelf-stable, nutritious food to feed a family of four for a day or a single person for four days - along with recipes, local resources, and even a can opener to ensure nothing goes to waste.
These bags do more than fill empty stomachs. They provide relief, dignity, and hope, especially for families who never expected to need help. Last year alone, dozens of patients left the hospital with one less worry because of this program.
But today, the funds that make these pantry bags possible have been fully depleted, just as demand is expected to rise. With the holiday season approaching, we anticipate a significant increase in the number of patients needing food assistance.
