Comfort Quilts

"Just like the quilt, all delicate pieces at the end of life have been sewn together, some not so pretty, others just a random piece, some delicate, and many absolutely beautiful that make the whole quilt, but it's all of those pieces together that make it a work of art. Each story of comfort will continue to be told because, just like the quilt, it's meant to be shared." -Anonymous

What is Comfort Care?

Similar to hospice care, patients on comfort care have been determined to have a terminal illness and have chosen not to receive treatment to prolong their life. Instead, the patient will receive care that aims to alleviate pain and other symptoms, enhance comfort, and improve quality of life. The goal is to make the patient as comfortable as possible during the final days, weeks, or months of life.

What is the Reason for Providing Quilts?

Comfort care in the hospital looks differently for each patient, but everyone loves to feel more at home and warm under a quilt made with love. By having a quilt placed over the patient, we hope the patient and their family will be comforted to know that the patient is receiving an extra layer of thoughtful support to help ease the grief experienced by all. The quilt will be given to the family after the patient passes.

The Beatrice Community Hospital Acute Care, Case Management, and Foundation Departments are asking for quilts to be donated to the Comfort Quilt program so that we are able to provide comfort to patients who are placed on Comfort Care measures.

We ask that all quilts being donated are new and in good condition. We hope that the integration of the Comfort Quilt program will provide peace and serenity to the patient and their families. If you have any questions about the quilt donation process, the BCH Foundation is happy to assist you.

Comfort Quilt Testimonials

"I lost my grandma four years ago in July. She suffered a stroke and was placed on comfort measures at our local hospital after the doctors ran multiple tests to conclude there was nothing further they could do, while also considering my grandma's wishes of what she would want for her medical treatment. My grandma was one of my best friends, where you could show up at her house and she would "force" you to eat some pie, drink some coffee, and talk about how things have been. As she provided comfort in her home to myself and my family, the quilt gave that comfort back to her. Seeing a family member in a hospital bed normally comes with uneasy emotions, so having the slightest change in the room including a simple quilt can shift the uneasy emotions to peaceful thoughts." - Cassie Strunk

"I lost my dear sister, Angie. The comfort quilt was placed on her bed and the first thing my sister shared was, "you should feel this." I wrapped it around her and the tears of comfort and peace she felt washed over her, she felt truly blessed in that moment. We then shared a family prayer as we laid our hands on her and sang a family song in harmony. The comfort quilt brought peace and the presence of the Holy Spirt and we all had the chance to hold on to her during her final days on this earth. She was at peace and that gave us peace.
