"Just like the quilt, all delicate pieces at the end of life have been sewn together, some not so pretty, others just a random piece, some delicate, and many absolutely beautiful that make the whole quilt, but it's all of those pieces together that make it a work of art. Each story of comfort will continue to be told because, just like the quilt, it's meant to be shared." -Anonymous
What is Comfort Care?
Similar to hospice care, patients on comfort care have been determined to have a terminal illness and have chosen not to receive treatment to prolong their life. Instead, the patient will receive care that aims to alleviate pain and other symptoms, enhance comfort, and improve quality of life. The goal is to make the patient as comfortable as possible during the final days, weeks, or months of life.
What is the Reason for Providing Quilts?
Comfort care in the hospital looks differently for each patient, but everyone loves to feel more at home and warm under a quilt made with love. By having a quilt placed over the patient, we hope the patient and their family will be comforted to know that the patient is receiving an extra layer of thoughtful support to help ease the grief experienced by all. The quilt will be given to the family after the patient passes.
The Beatrice Community Hospital Acute Care, Case Management, and Foundation Departments are asking for quilts to be donated to the Comfort Quilt program so that we are able to provide comfort to patients who are placed on Comfort Care measures.
We ask that all quilts being donated are new and in good condition. We hope that the integration of the Comfort Quilt program will provide peace and serenity to the patient and their families. If you have any questions about the quilt donation process, the BCH Foundation is happy to assist you.
